The Radical Film Network Conference 2017 - Tolpuddle will take place from 14.00 on Thursday 13th July - 14.00 on Saturday 15th July at the Tolpuddle Festival, UK. The conference will run alongside the Tolpuddle Radical Film Festival, and the larger festival will also host initiatives such as a Radical History School.

The conference will take place in a marquee and in the Vintage Mobile Cinema on the Tolpuddle Festival.

A festival in Tolpuddle to celebrate the story of the six martyrs has been running in one form or another since 1875 and today it ranks with the Durham Miners Gala and Levellers Day in Burford, Oxfordshire, as one the key summer events in the annual calendar of the UK Left.

This year the RFN Conference is a space for researchers, filmmakers, film exhibitors, cultural workers and activists involved in radical film culture, to meet up and share knowledge and materials with comrades in the trade union movement.

The Conference Fee includes access to the Tolpuddle Festival, however participants will require to purchase parking and camping/campervan tags separately on the shop site.

Any questions about tickets, travel or accommodation to Chris Jury [email protected]

The conference working group would like to invite researchers, filmmakers and moving image artists, exhibitors, cultural workers, and activists involved in radical film culture to attend and share knowledge and materials with each other and comrades in the trade union movement. We welcome proposals for, but not limited to, academic papers of 20 minutes or less, presentations of practice-based or in-progress research, workshops and skill-shares and discussions. The proposed presentations will ideally invite active participation by the audience.

The working group is particularly interested in receiving proposals that might address the following topics:

- Radical rhetoric, poetics, and the essay film

- Politically engaged artist film

- Expanded and experimental approaches to political documentary aesthetics

- Dialogue between earlier radical cinema practices and current activist media/ film collectives

- Trade Unions and film, using the location of the conference in order to forge relationships between RFN practitioners and researchers and union activists

The conference will also host a workshop looking ahead to the 2018 RFN festival theme 1968-2018-2068 and invites those interested in participating and developing that event to share knowledge, partnerships and ideas. Additional workshops, guests, and events will be listed as confirmed on the RFN conference page.

Please send a short description of your proposal for participation, a brief bio, any accessibility requirements, and if relevant, links to practice-based elements and technical specifications to [email protected] by 12 May.

The conference fees will include access to the festival and delegates can choose to camp.

We look forward to seeing you in Tolpuddle!

About the Radical Film Network

The Radical Film Network was founded in London in 2013 when a group of activists, academics, filmmakers and programmers involved in radical film culture met to discuss the ways in which they could work together to support its development, growth and sustainability.

Since then the RFN has grown rapidly, and now consists of more than one hundred organisations across four continents. Affiliated organisations range from artists’ studios and production collectives to archives, co-ops, distributors, film festivals and exhibition venues, as well as a host of other less easily categorised groups… More information about these organisations is available in the Directory. The RFN’s Mailing List, meanwhile, enables those involved with radical film culture to share information and ideas around the world.
