Shop : Gifts : Spanish Civil War Tea Towel - Radical Tea Towel Co..

The Spanish Civil War (1936-9) broke out after General Franco led nationalist rebels against the democratically elected Republican government. An international non-intervention pact meant that foreign powers, apart from Russia, refused to get involved, while Franco received support from Italy and Germany. Meanwhile, the Communist International established the International Brigades, paramilitary units set up by to help the government resist the rebellion. It is estimated that 32,000 people from 52 countries fought against Franco in the conflict, among them George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway who immortalised their experiences in their novels "Homage to Catalonia" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls". The Artists International Association in Britain launched a campaign entitled "Help Spain!" to encourage recruitment This tea towel is based on an anonymous AIA poster design of 1937.

Specifications: Half Panama unbleached cotton (heavy weight, textured finish). Stitched on all four sides. Includes hanging loop. Measures approximately 48 x 70cm. Machine wash at 40 degrees max. We recommend that before you use your tea towel for the first time you wash it at least once to soften up the material and make it more absorbent for drying dishes. Please note size can vary slightly.
