Those of us of a certain age are bound to have heard about the outstanding life of Helen Keller, who died in 1968. She proved to the world that being deaf and blind need not be a bar to full participation in life and became the first deaf-blind person to gain a bachelor of arts degree. She was an author, a member of the Socialist Party of America, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World union, and campaigned for women’s suffrage, labour rights, socialism and pacifism.
