The illustration on this seasonal cards is by the children’s book illustrator and artist Walter Crane (1845-1915). Crane was an ardent Socialist and offered his talents to support the leftist cause. He was a friend of textile designer William Morris, and like him decried what he saw as the dehumanising effects of modern manufacturing. Crane admired the Pre-Raphaelite artists and was not averse to using both medieval and Christian symbols to enhance his political message.
